The Mercedes-AMG One hypercar has broken yet another record for road-legal production cars, and this time it did it at the famed Monza circuit. Nicknamed the Temple of Speed for good reason, the AMG One completed a lap of the track in an astonishing time of 1:43.902, adding yet another track to the record list to its name.
Previous records for an unmodified production car are not crystal clear, but several sources support evidence that Ferrari (with 488 Pista) and Porsche (with 911 GT3 RS) clocked 1:55.60 and 1:55.30 respectively, over 10 seconds more than the Teutonic hypercar. The AMG One was so fast that it even surpassed the time of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and curiously approached the performance of F1, with Carlos Sainz who achieved a 1:38.53 in 2017 (with the Toro Rosso STR12).
Since Monza rewards high speeds, this helps explain how the AMG One with its top speed of over 350km/h, has caught up. In short, Monza boasts a really long straight and it is not surprising that the AMG-One, with its 1,063 horsepower and extremely bad aerodynamics, managed to catch up. There is no video footage of the AMG One (yet), but we hope it becomes available soon and we can get to know even more about this revolutionary car. We may never see a hypercar like the AMG-One again thanks to the continued transition to electric and, therefore, this record could remain in the track documents for many years to come.
--> If you are a fan of track events and you are in the area around Monza, we remind you that a new edition of MiMo (Milan Monza Motor Show) will be held at the beginning of June and it will be possible to see many historic and modern cars whizzing by.
