Midjourney restricts the use of its AI image generator

Midjourney has ended the free use of its AI image generator following the creation of deepfakes of prominent people using its tool. The company's CEO, David Holz, said the free trials were discontinued due to trial abuse and exceptional demand. To use the technology, it will now be necessary to pay at least $10 a month.

Recently, Midjourney has received unwanted attention due to deepfakes depicting Donald Trump , former president of the United States, under arrest and Pope Francis with a stylish coat, created with the company's AI. Although the images were quickly identified as fake, concerns arise regarding the use of Midjourney, OpenAI's DALL-E and similar generators to spread disinformation. Holz acknowledged the difficulties in establishing content policies and expressed hope to improve AI moderation that checks for abuse. Some AI developers, such as OpenAI, have strict rules in place to prevent accidents, while others, such as Stability AI, have looser guidelines.
