Super Mario, his B-side in the new film has left many fans perplexed

Super Mario

The news is that in the past few hours Illumination, the animation house responsible for the success of the Minions, has released the first poster of the animated film on Super Mario Bros., the first trailer of which will be released on Thursday 7 October. But the real news, the one that is making the fans of the legendary Italian-American plumber talk about, is another and focuses entirely on one detail of the poster itself: it concerns, so to speak, the shapes of the little hero of video games. Many have noticed, in fact, that the new character design would not do justice to the B-side of him, which emerges in a rather disappointing way from his characteristic denim overalls.

With irony many Twitter users have noticed that Super Mario's butt is an extremely important part of his body, as he often needs it to jump here and there and above all to kill, by jumping on it, the fearsome Goomba mushroom-like ones. Even if someone has noticed that even the characters of the videogame world should not be body shaming, the hilarity has spread precisely because in the image just released Mario is represented from behind and the anatomical detail of him is decidedly unflattering. For years now, many designs of video game film adaptations have come under the scrutiny of the network: the first version of Sonic in the 2020 film, which then actually became a success, was modified precisely following online criticism, while much rumored about Lola Bunny's new appearance in Space Jam: A New Legacy, due to the removal of the traits that made her essentially a sexy bunny.

Sitting aside, the Super Mario Bros. movie, at least starting with this initial poster, doesn't look bad: in fact we see our hero immersed in an animated world, surrounded by several Toad, shaped houses mushroom and above all on the horizon the castle of Princess Peach (which obviously will not be there but will wait for him in yet another place). The new film, which will be released in American theaters on April 7, 2023, is not new to some criticisms in any case: the choice of having Chris Pratt dubbing the protagonist, an actor repeatedly accused of not having a clear position on LGBTQ + issues and moreover. not even an Italian American, he had left several fans unhappy. We will see how the first trailer will be and especially if, after the bitterness of the fans, the B side will also undergo some tweaks.

Mario Movie Poster Subtly Hints At Its Biggest Missing Game Character

The first poster for Illumination Entertainment's Super Mario Bros. movie has been revealed, with the highly detailed poster being packed to the brim with Easter eggs and references - possibly even hinting at the movie's biggest missing video game character. Many players were wary about Illumination's upcoming adaptation, but the first poster seems to have relieved skeptics. The first poster for Illumination's Super Mario Bros. movie is incredibly faithful to the source material, with the first look providing a lot to unpack.

Illumination's Super Mario Bros. movie has been in development since 2017, acting as part of Nintendo's multimedia collaboration with the company, with the film following in the footsteps of Universal Studio's Super Nintendo World expansion. While the film has been under wraps for some time, a Nintendo Direct in September 2021 gave the first major details for the film, announcing a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Of the nine characters that were announced, some were fairly obscure, including Cranky Kong and Foreman Spike. With this announcement came the reveal that the film would release in December 2022, although the Super Mario Bros. movie was later delayed to April 2023. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting further news about the project, with the strange cast and questionable track record of Illumination leaving many on the edge of their seats.

The first poster for the Super Mario Bros. movie shows the titular plumber standing in the middle of a bustling Mushroom Kingdom, featuring shops, several Toads, various enemies from the games, and famous landmarks including Princess Peach's castle. The poster is incredibly busy, but when examining it can be seen that several details hint at another major unannounced Mario character: Yoshi. Yoshi is Mario's rideable dinosaur friend, with the iconic green character representing a species that frequently pops up throughout the Mario series. Although Yoshi wasn't announced among the known cast of the Super Mario Bros. movie, it is almost impossible to deny that the dinosaur will appear in the movie now. On the left of the poster, a Yoshi egg can be seen in the antiques shop, with Yoshi spawning out of the egg in the games. Further cementing his appearance, the right of the poster features some kind of produce shop, featuring fruits that are associated with Yoshi in games like Yoshi's Story and Super Mario Sunshine.

Yoshi has become a staple of the Mario series, appearing in nearly every mainline and spin-off Mario game, and even getting his own series of platformers and puzzle games. Yoshi is arguably one of the quintessential mascots of the Mario series, and it would be a major disservice to the character's legacy to not feature him in the Super Mario Bros. movie. On top of that, Illumination loves marketable characters like the Minions, and Yoshi is perfect for that role in the Super Mario Bros. movie. Universal Studios' Super Nintendo World even has a whole dark ride dedicated to Yoshi, highlighting just how important the species is to the series.

With the Super Mario Bros. movie having relatively more obscure characters like Foreman Spike in the film, it would be a shame not to feature Yoshi. However, the fact that a Yoshi egg appears in the poster seems to confirm that the character will at least be referenced in the film, if not seen outright. While Yoshi's appearance in the Super Mario Bros. movie is still unconfirmed, the teases still bode well for the project.
