A not insignificant review, in short, for a film that could have been a niche film but which will now attract the attention of quite a few onlookers. Pearl is after all the prequel of a another film also made by West and written with Mia Goth, actress seen in Nymphomaniac by Lars Von Trier and Suspiria by Guadagnino: X, also released in 2022, told the story of an aspiring porn actress called Maxine Minx who in 1979 found herself shooting a film in the remote American countryside on an estate owned by a old couple, before discovering that the elderly Pearl is actually a homicidal maniac. This prequel, on the other hand, focuses precisely on Pearl's youth who, at the time of the First World War, is a country girl plagued by family problems but also willing to do anything, even to kill, in order to pursue her dream of working in the cinema. .
Pearl made its debut in Venice, while it was released last September 16th in American theaters, already earning 3 million dollars. In a screening of the same film that took place during the Toronto film festival, a post-credits scene revealed the teaser of what will be the third film in this saga: it will be titled MaXXXine and will be a sequel to the original X. In it we will once again see Goth take on the role of Maxine, a survivor of the massacre started by Pearl, who tries to continue her film career, however, running into other grotesque and bloody misadventures. The whole trilogy promises to be a great tribute to the horror genre covering various strands ranging from classic Hollywood gothic to the most recent slasher movies.
