Electric vehicles are offered as an excellent solution to reduce emissions and therefore tend to save the planet, but is this (also) the reason that drives the purchase of battery-powered cars?
A recent study conducted on behalf of the Swedish car manufacturer Polestar showed that out of 5,086 American drivers, 55% of the respondents buy an electric vehicle for reasons other than environmental ones. According to Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar, the transition to electricity would be linked, in addition to environmental purposes, to the process of technological innovation.
Although most respondents did not cite eco-conscience as a driving factor for buying a new car, the data show that younger buyers consider it more than older ones. 12% of Gen Z respondents (ages 18-24) said that image is a determining factor in choosing an electric vehicle, a much higher percentage than Millennial and Boomer. The brand image showed a similar split, with 57% of Millennials saying they are confident in a new electric vehicle brand like Polestar compared to just 28% of Boomers. About 46% of all respondents said they would be willing to buy from a start-up brand, unfortunately a very low number for a company like Polestar trying to compete with Porsche.
