The Witcher universe continues to expand. After the Netflix series, now in its second season, has made the stories and characters invented by the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowsk i even more popular in the world, in the past few hours an announcement has arrived regarding another type of expansion, that of videogames, which was the first to make Geralt of Rivia and his companions truly popular all over the world. The production house CD Projekt Red has in fact made it known through the official website of the game that a new chapter of The Witche r is currently under development, adding that this new title "will launch a new saga within the franchise".
This last sentence is rather enigmatic and open to multiple interpretations. At the moment there are no further details neither on the timing of the launch nor on the plot that will accompany this new video game. In the past, the managers of CD Projekt Red had made it known that they considered The Witcher as a real trilogy, which therefore theoretically ended with the third game released, The Wild Hunt, released in 2015. This, however, did not prevent them from exploring other adventures as happened in spin-off Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales of 2018. It is therefore not clear whether characters like Geralt or Ciri will return to this new game and whether previously left over stories will be closed, or it will be a global restart. The only clue for now is a promotional image with a Witcher pendant with eyes lit up in red.
What has been announced with certainty, however, is that the new game will use the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, thanks to a multi-year agreement as the developer Epic Games, as well as other updates will be used in the future of the same software. The news is relevant after the fiasco of the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated new work by CD Projekt Red which, however, was marred by delays and technical bugs; the latter used instead REDengine, the graphics engine created in-house by Projekt Red itself but which will now be destined only for expansions of Cyberpunk itself. Even the choice to announce another chapter of The Witcher probably goes in the direction of regaining ground and above all the confidence of videogame enthusiasts after the recent fiascos, thus playing on safer ground. Everything, however, will only be revealed over time.
