A couple of days ago Dorna, the company that owns the rights related to MotoGP and MotoE, announced its intention to abandon Energica as a supplier for the electric bikes that run the MotoE championship; the collaboration contract with Energica was about to expire, and in just a couple of days it has already been revealed that the future of the MotoE will be entrusted to Ducati.
The news was spread during a special press conference organized at Misano World Circuit, during which Dorna's CEO, Carmelo Expeleta, and Ducati's CEO, Claudio Domenicali, announced the collaboration that will bring Ducati motorcycles to race in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup championship between 2023 and 2026. >
But which bike will you be racing in this championship? Good question, considering that to date Ducati does not seem particularly invested in the development of electric mobility technologies. In 2019 Domenicali himself had announced a project for an electric motorcycle not far from the production phase; subsequently the company took a step back, stating a few months ago that Ducati is not yet interested in producing an electric street bike, as current technologies would not be sufficiently advanced to satisfy the demanding clientele of the Borgo Panigale house.
Just 6 months after this very important statement, Ducati is back in the limelight: “Ducati enters the world of electric mobility starting from the top”, these are the words of Claudio Domenicali during the press conference. The commitment to MotoE will allow the company to work on technologies to then be taken to public roads.
The motorcycle prototype for the MotoE seems to have already been in development for more than a year, with particular attention to lightness, efficiency, and the composition of the battery. Asked about the timing of the release of a zero-emission road bike, Domenicali indicated the period 2025-2030 as a possible release period.
