PS4, thousands of consoles used in a laboratory in a surprising way

PS4

In the last few hours, a decidedly curious story has come to light, which took place in Ukraine and which concerns a really large amount of PS4. The city of Vinnytsia recently experienced a disproportionate increase in energy consumption from a long-abandoned factory, so much so that the electricity reaching the town was limited. The local law enforcement officers then carried out more thorough checks, uncovering a strange truth.

The facility was far from abandoned, as the Security Service of Ukraine discovered a real inside mining laboratory: more than 5000 hardware devices have been found actively engaged in cryptocurrency mining, consuming an exaggerated amount of electricity. To be particularly curious is that of these, "only" 500 were graphics cards while 3800 were PS4, exploited for the same purpose. This detail would then explain the huge amount of electricity consumed in that plant alone.

This is a peculiar fact especially since the PS4 hardware is not meant for mining, and forcing Sony's consoles to perform however this work has evidently required a disproportionate amount of it. Previously, it was not even thought that it was possible to mine cryptocurrencies with gaming consoles, however, photos from law enforcement agencies confirm the opposite. However, if the people behind this lab were using so many PlayStation 4s, they had clearly found a way to do it.

On PS4 the memory bandwidth reaches a maximum of 176 GBps, while the Pro version reaches 217.6 GPps. To make a comparison, the most used video card in mining, the Radeon RX 580, surpasses PS4 Pro by reaching the maximum bandwidth of 256 GBps. Difficult to understand why the miners decided to take advantage of Sony's consoles, since it would have been much more efficient to do a setup with GPUs.
