Dune: New IMAX trailer for the film is on the way

Dune

Three months before Dune's theatrical release, visitors to an IMAX cinema can look forward to another exclusive trailer for the new edition of the 1984 classic. The film's Twitter account states that the new material will be there on July 21st and 22nd. In addition to the new trailer, an extended clip from Dune will also be shown. It can be assumed that at least the trailer - after the IMAX start - will also be published on YouTube.

Back in September 2020, four months after the first official images for Dune dropped, we got the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic take on the classic Frank Herbert novel. At the time, Dune was supposed to premiere just three months later, but it was eventually pushed back almost a full year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So we still have several more months to go until Dune finally plays on the big screen, but fortunately, some new footage has debuted ahead of a special IMAX event.

On July 21 and July 22, IMAX Presents: An Exclusive Look at Dune will provide plenty of goodies for folks who’ve been looking forward to the sci-fi film. Want a taste of what this event will feature? Watch the below video shared on Dune’s social media platforms.

At the very least, this video serves as a reminder of how action-packed and visually stunning Dune will be, but more importantly, it’s an appetizer to the main course that is IMAX Presents: An Exclusive Look at Dune. Taking place in 25 cities in the United States and Canada, as well as 18 other countries, the IMAX screening will show off never-before-seen footage, music from the movie and more. All this will culminate in the debut of the new Dune trailer. Should you live in or around any of the locations where this two-day free event is being held, head over to the movie’s website to reserve your seat.

It stands to reason that the new Dune trailer will eventually make its way to the internet, whether it’s just a day after the IMAX event or as long as a week or two later. However, if you’re especially jazzed about Dune, this screening sounds like a must-see, as it’s unlikely the additional content being presented will ever be uploaded online. Either way, outside of a few pictures here and there, we haven’t gotten any major new looks at Dune since last fall, so it’ll be nice to finally have more footage to absorb.

Adapting the first half of its source material, Dune follow Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the son of Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica and Oscar Isaac’s Duke Leto Atreides, accompanying his family to the planet Arrakis, which is the only source of spice, the universe’s most valuable substance. Arrakis has fallen under Leto’s stewardship, but when the Duke is betrayed by Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his followers, Paul and Jessica must venture deep into the sandworm-infested desert on their new home and form an alliance with the Fremen to take back what is rightfully there’s. Along with the aforementioned actors, Dune’s cast includes Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling, among others.

In addition to directing Dune, Denis Villeneuve also co-wrote the script with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. While the latter has written a full treatment of Dune 2, it hasn’t been officially announced yet if the latter half of Frank Herbert’s novel will be cinematically adapted. There’s also a prequel spinoff series in the works called Dune: The Sisterhood, which will focus on the Bene Gesserit.

Like the rest of Warner Bros’ 2021 slate, Dune will premiere both in theaters and on HBO Max for a 31-day window (you can subscribe to the streaming service with this link) on October 22. Look through our 2021 release schedule to learn what other movies will come out in the latter half of the year.
