2020-21 Charlotte Hornets Player Review: Devonte' Graham

The additions of LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward were always going to change the roles of the incumbent Hornets this season but perhaps no players saw their role change quite as much as Devonte’ Graham.

After dominating the ball and the offense in a breakout sophomore season, Graham shifted to a secondary playmaker this season and flourished all the same. His efficiency rose, his 3-point shooting increased and he was as clutch as ever for the Hornets.

His play leaves Charlotte in an unenviable position of choosing between Graham and Malik Monk after strong campaigns from both.

Stat of the Season

1.97.

Known for his offense, Graham also graded out as a plus defender by nearly all metrics this season. ESPN’s Real Plus-Minus (RPM) measures a player’s estimated on-court impact on team defensive performance, measured in points allowed per 100 defensive possessions. Graham’s Defensive RPM of 1.97 was seventh-highest among point guards.

Notable Exit Interview Quote

On how moving to the bench impacted him…

“At the end of the day, people who know me know, I’m not a big ego, big ‘oh, I got to be starting’ because at the end of the day, I feel like I’m going to be on the court playing meaningful minutes regardless and helping the team. So, I’ll let my ego and my pride get set aside. At the end of the day, it’s all about the winning.”

Overview

In his second season, 45% of Graham’s possessions were categorized as pick and rolls compared to just 13.7% of his possessions ending in spot-up opportunities. The easiest way to show how different his role was in 2021 was that pick and rolls and spot-ups each accounted for 29.4% of his offensive possessions.

With Ball and Hayward coming in as playmakers, Graham saw less of the ball and more open 3-pointers. And yet, he still excelled by finishing in the 97th percentile as a spot-up shooter. This season, 77 players had a minimum of 200 spot-up possessions, according to Synergy, and only Marcus Morris of the Clippers finished with more points per possession than Graham.

Every advanced stat loved Graham in 2021. He was first on the team in net rating, first in defensive rating, sixth in the league among point guards in RPM and 14th in the league in individual net rating in clutch situations.

He was vital to the Hornets no matter the role he played in, whether it was as a starter, off the bench, as a playmaker or as a shooter.

Outlook

For the Hornets, the problem with Graham having so much success is his price only continued to rise this season as he enters restricted free agency. With LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier on the roster, how much will the Hornets be willing to pay a third guard?

It helps that the three-guard lineup featuring each of them was a successful one this season. But will the team be willing to pay Graham to be a sixth man? Would they trade Rozier and start Graham alongside Ball? Would they let Graham walk and choose to pay Monk?

All of that is why it’s an unenviable position for the Hornets this season.
