Pennies add up for good cause

A handful of pennies in the change jar or a wallet can add up pretty fast. For students at Lisbon’s McKinley Elementary School, pennies and spare change added up to $877.67.

The money was raised for the school’s Pennies for Pets Initiative, which was put on through the school’s Learning is Cool After School program. The $878.67 was donated to Forever Safe Farm, a non-profit in Salem.

The fourth grade raised the most and will be rewarded with a special pet assembly, which will be paid for by the after school program.

McKinley students also generously donated 60 items for the dog pound and 45 items for cats at the Humane Society. The kindergarten class collected the most and will also also be treated to a special pet assembly paid for with after school program funding.

The Learning is Cool After School Program at McKinley is a 21st Century Grant written by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center for McKinley Elementary. The school is in the second year of the grant which has provided McKinley with $400 for student engagement, learning, support and enrichment. Close to two dozen students, K-5 are part of the Learning is Cool After School program. There’s no cost for a student to be a part of the program, but spots are limited.
