Record-breaking Mario Kart 8

Nintendo enjoys the sales results of Mario Kart 8. As reported by the NPD, the body that takes care of tracking the sales data of the various video games, the racing game of the Kyoto house has in fact succeeded in an incredible goal, namely that to overcome its previous incarnation dedicated to Wii, the best-selling console of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era.

The most impressive figure, however, concerns the number of sales: Mario Kart 8 has in fact become not only the best-selling game of the series but also the racing game that has sold the most in the history of the United States of America. Thrilling numbers: obtained, this is true, by combining the sales on Wii U and Nintendo Switch but still incredible, especially considering the installed base of the first, very small when compared to the hybrid console that debuted in 2017.

But there is another fact that concerns the Nintendo Switch and that is really scary: it seems that the Nintendo console is supported only by incredible best sellers. In addition to Mario Kart 8, which in fact reached 33 million copies sold, Animal Crossing also set a not indifferent goal, placing itself in second place with a total of 31.18 million copies sold. These numbers are not to be taken into consideration: Nintendo Switch is in fact a young console, which is about 4 years older than PlayStation 4 and the Sony console has had important roofs with Marvel's Spider-Man and GTA V, which, however, have only reached the 20 million units sold.

Seeing these numbers, especially those of Mario Kart 8, it now seems clear that Nintendo's strategy on the eventual release of Switch Pro is not to accelerate but to wait. On the other hand, the Kyoto house probably has very prosperous years in sight, especially considering how the sales of each software are very attractive compared to the past.

Mario Kart 8 Becomes The 'Best-Selling' Racing Game In US History

The eighth entry in the Mario Kart series has finally surpassed the sales of Mario Kart Wii in the US to be crowned the 'best-selling' racing game in this country.

This information comes from NPD Group's Mat Piscatella. According to IGN, this includes the 'combined' sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the original Mario Kart 8 game on Wii U.

Mat also notes how the latest entry in the Mario Kart series was in the best-sellers chart last month:

'US NPD SW - Mario Kart 8 placed 6th on the March 2021 best-sellers chart. Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing genre video game in U.S. history.'

Nintendo sales data (as of 31st December 2020) reveals Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has shifted 33.41 million units worldwide and is the top-selling Switch game. The Wii U original, as of 20th September 2020, has sold 8.45 million copies.

These sales combined (41.86 million) obviously surpass Mario Kart Wii lifetime sales, but individually, the Wii game is still technically out in front globally - with 37.38 million units sold.
