It is certainly no secret that the availability of the latest graphics cards, both from NVIDIA and AMD, is rather scarce. To give us a more precise idea of the seriousness of the problem, the European retailer Proshop had long ago released the numbers relating to the parts in stock at the launch of the NVIDIA 30 series cards. Recently, he also shared new figures showing the availability of AMD's Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT and the situation certainly doesn't look better.

Of course this is a single supplier's data, but it gives us a good starting point for explaining the current GPU shortage and what suppliers are facing.
The amount of inventory that Proshop received for the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT is really insufficient, even less than the proposals based on NVIDIA's Ampere architecture. In fact, the retailer only got 100 RX 6800 cards, all from Powercolor. Eight Asus RX 6800 TUF OC and five Asus RX 6800 Strix OC are also expected to arrive. In total, there are only 113 products, compared to the 2,213 that Proshop has ordered from all partners.

As for the aftermarket models, only six Asus RX 6800XT Strix LC OC and three Asus RX 6800XT TUF OC cards are on the way. This equates to a total of 34 RX 6800 XTs, compared to an order of 1,909 pieces ordered.

AMD has hinted several times that it would “learn from NVIDIA's mistakes” and offer larger volumes than the competition. But it is clear that the problems remain and are quite substantial. Hopefully Sunnyvale's company keeps its promise of fixing this shortage by the end of December, but it will be pretty difficult.
