Steve Carell and the rest of the Space Force cast will be back for at least one more season. The official announcement yesterday afternoon was Netflix itself, which also stated that the show will see additions but also necessary changes.
The first season of Space Force (of which you can read our review here ) was one of the most expensive products for Netflix, both for the above-average special effects for this type of productions and for the stellar cast. The deal with Steve Carell alone is believed to be one of the most expensive ever granted by the streaming platform, which has paid the actor over $ 1 million per episode for his multiple work as main protagonist, co-creator and executive producer. However, this budget did not find a balance with the reception of the series. The first season of Space Force in fact only recorded a 38% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score was more forgiving, collecting a 75% rating.
Netflix will therefore intervene to reduce the huge budget of the show. According to THR's report, the photography of the series will be moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver, a growing location for Hollywood productions.
At the same time, however, screenwriter Norm Hiscock (producer of Brooklyn Nine-Nine) who will join Greg Daniels as co-showrunner. Actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang, who plays Dr. Chan Kaifang in the series, will also collaborate on the script.
This shuffling was dictated by Netflix in the hope that, as it was for The Office, from the second season Space Force improve and gain a wider following.
The satirical concept behind the series is valid but not fully exploited, and certainly there is no shortage of talented faces. In addition to Steve Carell and Jimmy O. Yang, the cast includes John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Lisa Kudrow, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, Spencer House, Patrick Warburton, Diedrich Bader, Owen Daniels and Noah Emmerich.
If you are a fan of the series you cannot fail to prove it with an iconic NASA-style t-shirt with the Space Force logo, which you can buy at this link.
